Welcome!

At The Phoenix, we love how sport brings people together, sparks inspiration, and creates moments you’ll never forget.  Thanks to the amazing support from our sponsors and community, we’re proud to offer golf opportunities near and far for players of all abilities.  If you’ve got a disability and a love for the game, we’ll make sure you get to play.

Although we’re based in Scotland, the birthplace of golf, our community stretches across the globe.  Our members come from all corners of the world, united by a shared love for the game, no matter their physical, sensory, or learning challenges.  We play together, make connections, and enjoy everything golf has to offer.

Every year, we run loads of events, including our big one: The Phoenix Cup. Inspired by the Ryder and Solheim Cups, this international team match play event made history as the first fully inclusive tournament of its kind.  It kicked off at Chippewa Creek Golf Club in Canada, where Scottish and Canadian players teamed up and featured players from Australia, Ireland, South Africa, Germany, and more.  The Phoenix Cup keeps breaking new ground and making memories that last a lifetime.

Recently, we brought together a lively mix of Scottish groups under one welcoming name: Phoenix Disability Golf. This includes Scottish Disability Golf, Vision Impaired Golfers, Disabled Golf Scotland, the Phoenix Cup itself, and a few smaller societies.  By joining forces, we’ve made our work smoother and our mission stronger.  With the help of dedicated volunteers, we’re all about making golf fun, inclusive, and open to anyone who wants to give it a go.

Whether you’ve been playing for years or are just starting out, we’d love to welcome you into our growing global family.  Come swing a club at one of our Hubs, learn something new from our Pro’s, and enjoy the inclusive spirit of golf with us.

Phoenix Disability Golf Ambassadors

Donald McKay, Head Professional Wellsgreen, Scotland

After more than 30 years of working alongside disabled golfers, I’ve had the incredible privilege of watching Phoenix Disability Golf flourish, and what a journey it’s been!  Seeing our amazing players prove time and again that disability is no barrier to passion, skill, and success on the course, has been nothing short of inspiring.  The recent event at St Andrews was a shining example of everything The Phoenix stands for.  The level of play was outstanding, the camaraderie was heart-warming, and the spirit of community and sportsmanship, truly lit up every fairway.  It was a celebration of talent, resilience, and the magic of golf bringing people together.

And now, I’m absolutely thrilled to take the next step, as an Ambassador for Phoenix Disability Golf and The Phoenix Cup! It’s a true honour and an exciting opportunity to champion inclusive golf and help open even more doors for people with disabilities to enjoy this fantastic game.  Let’s keep growing the game, together!

Wendy Chamberlain, Member of Parliament at Westminster

I thoroughly enjoyed meeting all the golfers, coaches and supporters at The Phoenix Cup at the Home of Golf, it was a truly special opportunity for both teams to play some of the world’s finest courses.  While the result leaned in favour of Team Europe, the real victory was for the growth of golf and its players with disabilities.  The impact was immeasurable.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve agreed to become an Ambassador for Phoenix Disability Golf, and I’m absolutely delighted to continue supporting golfers with disabilities around the globe. I believe passionately in creating inclusive opportunities across all levels of the game.

Looking ahead to next June's Phoenix Cup at Pine Valley Golf Club, I hope it brings even more chances for players of all ages and abilities to shine. Wishing everyone the best of luck for the 32nd Phoenix!

Gianna S Rojas, Founder Adaptive Golf, USA

I’m honoured to accept the invitation to become an Ambassador for Phoenix Disability Golf and The Phoenix Cup.  As someone born without fingers on my left hand, I’ve spent a lifetime navigating a world that wasn’t always built with people like me in mind.  Growing up in a military family meant moving often, and being the “new kid” was made even more challenging by looking visibly different.  I experienced firsthand what we now call bullying, and those early experiences shaped my resilience and determination.

Years later, I decided to pick up a club.  That decision changed everything.  Today, I’m proud to be known as the “One-Handed Lady Golfer”.  At Adaptive Golfers, we help individuals shift their mind-set from “Can I?” to “How can I?”—a philosophy that aligns beautifully with Phoenix Golf’s mission of inclusivity and empowerment.  I’m thrilled to join this community and look forward to championing a game that truly has room for everyone.  Let’s tee up change together!

Ian Grimwade, Regional Manager Invited Clubs, USA

Ian Grimwade is the Regional Manager of Public Golf Courses for Invited Clubs and General Manager of Willow Creek Golf & Country Club in Mount Sinai in New York State.  He oversees eight public clubs stretching from New York to Florida, providing strategic leadership and operational direction across the portfolio.  With nearly 16 years at Invited, Ian has held leadership roles at premier facilities, including Atlanta National Golf Club, Bear’s Best Atlanta, and River Creek Club, serving as General Manager, PGA Director of Golf, and PGA Head Golf Professional.  His deep experience spans both public and private clubs, combining top-tier course management with player development.

Before heading to the U.S., Ian headed up Business Development at Edinburgh Leisure in Scotland, overseeing six municipal golf courses and leading initiatives to expand accessible golf opportunities.  It was during this time that the Phoenix connection was forged and began to flourish.

Ian proudly serves as an Ambassador for The Phoenix Cup, passionately advocating for inclusivity in golf for players with disabilities. He played a pivotal role in shaping the early growth of our group as a mentor and coach for disabled golfers, helping them build confidence and sharpen their skills both on and off the course.  “I’m honoured to take on the role of Ambassador for The Phoenix Cup and remain committed to supporting Phoenix players with disabilities around the world. Wishing everyone a fantastic season and every success at the next Cup in Ohio.!”

Robert Kotowski, PGA Golf Professional & Founder The California Blind & Disabled Classic

It is with heartfelt gratitude that I accept the invitation to serve as an ambassador for Phoenix Disability Golf.  Having recently completed my tenure as honorary Captain, I am deeply honoured to continue supporting this inspiring community in a new capacity.  The mission of Phoenix Disability resonates strongly with my lifelong commitment to making golf accessible and meaningful for every player, regardless of ability.  I look forward to contributing my experience and energy to furthering the reach and impact of your programs.

Throughout my career, I have witnessed the transformative power of golf in the lives of blind, disabled, and adaptive players.  From my early days caddying in Melrose to coaching thousands of students across decades, I have always believed that golf is more than a sport—it is a bridge to confidence, connection, and joy.  Phoenix Disability exemplifies this spirit, and I am eager to collaborate with fellow ambassadors and supporters who share a passion for inclusion and excellence.  Together, we can continue to build pathways for participation and achievement.

As part of my commitment, I would like to offer my coaching and instructional services to all adaptive players at no cost.  With over 60 years in the game, 30,000 lessons delivered, and 45 years dedicated to disabled golf, I am confident I can assist with any challenge that comes their way.  Thank you again for this opportunity to serve.  I am proud to stand alongside you in creating a welcoming and empowering environment for all who love the game.
